Training Project

Training project - Molecular Medicine Cycle XLI

The Teaching Board approves the training project for each doctoral student.
The doctoral student's training project consists of
a) in the development, under the guidance of the Supervisor, of an individual research programme referring to a specific disciplinary field among those on which the Course is focused;
b) attendance of doctoral-level teaching activities complementary to the research, not less than 20 CFU. The recognition of CFUs, which may be acquired by attending lectures and other educational activities, is carried out by the Board of Teachers, which authorises attendance and assesses the results. Teaching activities, which may also be organised jointly among several Courses, also include training activities aimed at supporting research activities and at providing tools to outline the professional identity of future PhDs.

The PhD course in Molecular Medicine provides for the acquisition of at least 18 CFU as follows

At least 15 CFU
- Higher education activities, also of seminar type, planned by the course itself or organised by other universities/research bodies/companies in the area, curricula and disciplines of reference
- Participation as speaker or auditor at national or international conferences, workshops, schools (etc.) in the reference discipline.

At least 2 CFU
- Transversal training activities in the areas of Mobility, Research, Career development, Communication, planned by the university or organised by other universities/research institutes/companies.
In view of the importance of language training, all PhD students must attend the EAP course ‘English for Academic Purposes’ (or an equivalent course) during their PhD course, with the exception of students with a certified C1 level (who will be awarded 3 CFU) and students exempted from attending the course by the Board of Teachers concerned for one of the following reasons: Master's degree in languages (with English as the first language) and/or course of study abroad entirely in English. The CFUs of the EAP course do not count towards the minimum credits to be acquired.

At least 1 CFU
- Tutoring activities, also paid, of students on degree and master's degree courses within the limits of coherence and compatibility with the research activities carried out;
- Supplementary teaching activities, 10 hours (within the limit of 40 hours per academic year);
- Third mission/social impact activities.
Tutoring activities carried out by students must be approved by the Teachers' Board and may not exceed 100 hours in the three-year course.

It is desirable that most of the activities be carried out within 18 months of the start of the doctoral programme in order to ensure adequate time for research activities and the writing of the thesis.
The individual research programme concludes with the writing of the thesis. The thesis, written in English, must contribute to the advancement of knowledge or methodology in the chosen field of investigation.

The Board of Lecturers annually assesses the training and research activities carried out by individual doctoral students for the purposes of admission to the following year and to the dissertation evaluation phase, as follows
(a) annual report (compiled using the PhD Notebook application and validated by the supervisor) on the teaching and research activities carried out, experiences gained and skills acquired, publications produced;
b) annual presentation of research results to be held towards the end of the year;
c) evaluation of scientific production and dissemination;
c) Evaluation by the supervisor/co-supervisor;
d) evaluation by the external reviewer.

The College may, however, in the presence of particularly critical situations, also carry out interim evaluations, if requested by the Supervisor.
