Training Project
Training project - Linguistic and Literary Studies XLI Cycle
The Board of teachers approves the training project for each doctoral student.
The doctoral student's training project consists of
a) in the development, under the guidance of the Supervisor, of an individual research programme referring to a specific disciplinary field among those on which the Course is focused;
b) attendance of doctoral-level teaching activities complementary to the research, not less than 20 CFU. The recognition of CFUs, which may be acquired by attending lectures and other educational activities, is carried out by the Board of Teachers, which authorises attendance and assesses the results. The didactic activities, which may also be organised jointly among several Courses, also include training activities aimed at supporting research activities and providing tools to outline the professional identity of future PhDs.
The PhD course in Linguistic and Literary Studies provides for the acquisition of CFUs articulated as follows:
At least 17 CFU
- of which at least 12 CFU to be accrued over the course of the three years through attendance (and passing any final exams) of curricular teaching of ‘Theories and Methodologies of Research’ relating to the three Curricula (Foreign Literature; Italianistics; Linguistics, Translation and Interpretation) (12 hours for each curriculum equal to 1.5 CFU each) and ‘interdisciplinary seminars’ on cross-curricular macro-themes decided by the Board on the proposal of the Teaching Commission (36 hours equal to 4.5 CFU), pertaining to the doctoral students' research areas. Curricular and extracurricular lectures will be held by lecturers from inside and outside the College and by experts from other Italian and foreign institutions in order to foster international exchange and openness. Teaching is mainly organised on doctoral days from November to May, and grouped into individual weeks (usually the last of the month), scheduled at the beginning of the academic year; lectures by internal and external Italian and foreign lecturers alternate; the doctoral students will also have the opportunity to present the state of work on their projects in seminars led by supervisors and internal/external experts who will discuss their developments. This organisation is intended to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, which is already inherent in the multidisciplinary tripartition of the course. Each lecture hour carries a workload of 0.125 CFU.
The PhD study manifesto on the website will list the courses planned for the academic year with an indication of the CFU allocated.
- 5 CFU may be obtained by attending (and passing any final examinations) other activities in the area and discipline of reference, organised by the universities of the College's members and by other Italian and foreign universities/research institutes/companies in accordance with the training and research objectives. These activities will be evaluated by the Board of teachers, giving each one (workshops, courses, conferences, seminars, winter and summer schools) a weight proportionate to that of the curricular lessons (i.e. up to 0.25 cfu of workload for every 2 hours of lessons). If the doctoral student presents a paper at a conference, he/she will be awarded an additional 0.50 CFU.
At least 3 CFU
- with compulsory attendance (and passing any final exams) of transversal courses/seminars, chosen from those scheduled annually by the University in the following 4 areas chosen by the Collegio: Research, Communication, Digital, Cognitive and interpersonal and with attendance of the ‘English for academic purposes’ course (5 CFU) for those not in possession of a C1 level. Doctoral students already in possession of a valid C1 level certificate or, as resolved by the Collegio on 24/37/2022, of an LM 37, 38, 39, 94, with a syllabus in which English was language A or B, may be exempted. The courses scheduled for the current year, with an indication of the CFUs allocated, are available at https://www.uniud.it/it/ricerca/bacheca-ricercatori/iniziative-ricerca.
Other CFUs beyond the minimum 20 required:
- by attending (and passing any final tests) transversal courses/seminars/conferences organised by the University. The Board of Lecturers assesses the suitability of these activities with respect to the student's training and research objectives and decides to assign them a maximum of 0.25 cfu per two hours of tuition.
- by attending (and passing any final tests) cross-curricular courses organised by other universities/research institutes/companies. The Board of Lecturers assesses the suitability of these activities in relation to the student's training and research objectives and decides to assign them a maximum of 0.25 cfu for every two hours of tuition.
The individual research programme concludes with the writing of the thesis. The thesis, written in the language agreed with the supervisor, must contribute to the advancement of knowledge or methodology in the chosen field of investigation.
The Teaching Board annually assesses the training and research activities carried out by individual doctoral students for the purposes of admission to the following year and to the thesis assessment stage as follows: for admission to the second year, doctoral students must submit an article on a topic related to the doctoral student's research project published/accepted for publication or in any case positively evaluated by the supervisor with a view to publication in national and international journals/collective volumes/conferences (30. /40,000 char.) and a report on the status of research related to the project topic (15,000 char.). The supervisors formulate an opinion on the article and the research status report, which they forward to the College.
For admission to the third year, doctoral students must submit a report on the progress of the project (approximately 20,000 carats), which must be presented in October to the Teachers' Board and submit to the supervisor the introductory part of the thesis or a chapter thereof; the supervisor must formulate a judgement to be forwarded to the Board by the end of October. Admission to the final examination requires the submission of the final report on the research and training activities, to the PhD Coordinator and to the Research Services Area, preliminarily examined by the supervisor.
The Board may however, in the presence of particularly critical situations, also carry out intermediate assessments, if requested by the Supervisor.
